Making Big Bottles Convenient: Innovative "One-Way" Four-gallon Recyclable Bottles Now Available Nationwide

HOT SPRINGS, AR - Mountain Valley Spring Company announced today the national availability of its innovative four-gallon "one-way" recyclable bottled-water package. The bottle, the only four-gallon fully recyclable water package available in the world, is manufactured by Veriplas, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mountain Valley Spring Company.

"We are excited about the future of this package with consumers across the country," said Jim Karrh, Mountain Valley Spring Company's chief marketing officer. "Many smart retailers are recognizing the convergence of two powerful trends. First, there is the explosive growth in sales of coolers and other water dispensers for Americans to use in their homes and offices. Second, there are increasing worries about the volume of small empty plastic water bottles filling landfill space. We believe this innovative bottle represents the near future of multi-gallon water packaging in America."

According to Taylor Cranor, Mountain Valley's Director of Retail, the one-way bottle is a huge leap in convenience for both consumers and retailers. "In an attempt to serve the strong consumer demand for bottled water, a few retailers had begun to offer standard multi-gallon water containers. This effort has come with significant costs. The retailers must collect and manage bottle deposits from their customers. The customers must remember to return empties to avoid paying additional bottle deposits. Plus, the retailer is forced to inventory and manage the returned empty bottles. The total of activity-based costs in retailing these multi-gallon sizes has deterred many retailers from being able to respond to underlying customer needs."

"The Veriplas four-gallon PET bottle eliminates these barriers. The bottle is a single-use package that requires no refill deposit and there is no empty to return to the retailer. Customers can simply place empty bottles in their curbside recycling bins."

Karrh adds, "We learned several things about the retail environment while researching and developing this package. One thing stood out in particular-no one really knows how many millions of dollars are tied up in bottle deposits."

The one-way bottle is the result of an 18-month process of design and development at Veriplas. The bottle is ultra light (only 307 grams of PET) yet can function under the atmospheric pressures created by bottled water dispensers. The bottles are manufactured using five percent PCR (post-consumer resin), a level considered high within the beverage container manufacturing industry. The bottles are available in a self-contained, display-ready pallet. Mountain Valley Spring Company recently debuted the one-way bottle under its Clear Mountain Spring Water brand at the FMI Show in Chicago and reported enthusiastic feedback.
